Opening eyes to the future.
who we are
The Abrolhos Institute is Cepemar's non-profit organization operating in the third sector. Created to develop strategies to increase the support on research within the park area. The Institute also focuses on the surroundings of the coastal cities where our team educates its population, especially the individuals that depend on fishing. Educating the community helps them better understand the impact they have on the environment and gives them the opportunity to get involved in local beach cleanups and other projects.
What we do
The Institute works with communities
surrounding the park educating and creating projects to help the community grow. Working with local fishing communities, volunteers, business owners and the community itself. Our projects focus on educating and learning useful tools to live a more sustainable life so that success can be longterm.
Sustainability and the environment is our utmost concern and everything we do focuses on ways to help prevent further pollution.

ABROLHOS
NATIONAL
PARK
Abrolhos archipelago is located 65 nautical miles away from the coast of Bahia and it consists of 5 volcanic islands harboring a diverse fauna of more than 1,300 species including mammals, birds, turtles, fish, crustacean, and mollusks.
Surrounded by a maze of unique coral reefs, the area was not easy to navigate during its discovery, giving visitors a hard time to guide their ships through it; therefore the great advice given to the sailors was often to shout: “Abra os Olhos”, which translates to Open your Eyes, giving it its name: Abrolhos.
The park is still home for many shipwrecks that after many years are now covered by a variety of corals and other marine life.
